Also thanks to Deputy Director Mathijs de Bruijn there is a short report after the Thursday morning flight.  Currently the Friday morning flight is in progress and can be seen on the live streaming option on the World Air Games web site at: www.wag2009.com/eng   During the streaming there is interesting narrative broadcast occasionally by the competition officials.

Thursday morning report

This morning we flew a four part task starting with a minimum distance double drop, a task wherein pilots must drop two markers in opposite quadrants of a circle with a radius of 100m. The best result is the shortest distance between the markers. A pilot can be tempted to drop as close to the centre as possible with the risk of a marker dropping in a wrong quadrant. We had some very good drops with a minimum of 7m and also some pilots dropping in the wrong quadrant.

After the MDD there was a JDG (Judge Declared Goal), a LRN and finally one more JDG. The local weather in Mondovi is one of a kind. Again this morning the motto was ?anything goes?. At the MDD 14 pilots took off 2km East of the goal and the other half 2km West. Normally one would say that one half goofed but here in Mondovi things are different and it looked like a soccer game, Marnix Dobbeleare from Belgium, said with two teams running against each other and meeting each other over the goal.

David Levin, the Event Director, was very happy when finally a handful balloons made it to the last target, proving that the tasks could be flown!

At this moment the task are being scored and will be up soon hopefully. Tonight the outlook is again good for a nice evening flight.

We are in the last day of the World Air Games 2009.  It has been a very exciting week and we are having a very exciting day today to finish the Championship.

    After a long difficult flight yesterday morning flying west to east, we had strong winds from the east in the afternoon with strength of up to 20 kts. Before the launch period, the forecast was for the winds to drop below 10kts. on the ground.  We planned a Fly-In and Watership Down but the winds stayed strong up until 8:00 pm.  With the winds not dropping, we changed the task to a two part Hare and Hound so we could control the launches from the Common Launch Area and cancel the flight if necessary. Fortunately the winds cooperated.

    The Hare Balloon Launched precisely at 8:00 pm piloted by myself and accompanied by measuring team captains Nathalie Dantan and Sylvia Meinl.  We flew west for twenty minutes before landing and dropping off one target and a measuring team captain.  We then continued northwest but had to stay up 2,000 feet and fly for forty minutes to avoid a large Bird Sanctuary which was a Red PZ.  After crossing the PZ we landed in the next available good field and the competitors were able to make good drops  before sunset which was the end of the scoring period.  Almost all competitors scored within the MSA on both targets. At the end of the day, Sven Goehler of Germany was in first place, followed by Igor Charbonnier of Italy and Uwe Schneider of Germany in third.

    This mornings task started with measuring the winds at the usual 3:00 am.  The surface winds were light and the high winds were moderate from the west.  We planned a flight where the competitors could use the high winds in the event the low winds died or changed directions dramatically.  The task sheet called for a Fly-In, Judge Declared Goal, Hesitation Waltz and ending with a Judge Declared (Star) Goal over the Clock Tower in Mondovi.  The low winds cooperated perfectly and competitors were able to score in the MSA in the first three tasks.  Then they maneuvered over town to fly over the Clock Tower approximately 50 meters above the tower.  The Jury and I were able to observe the fly over from a beautiful park at the base of the tower.  There could not have been a more scenic location in all the World.  The Medieval Mountain Top City is truly spectacular.  We now anxiously await the scores to see who is in the lead.  Unfortunately, Igor Charbonniers? balloon a tear and he had to land after the first target.  This was very disappointing as he had been in second place and scored very well on the first goal.

    We have now completed twenty-two tasks and the weather forecast for the last flight tonight looks good.  It has been a fantastic week of flying so far and we look forward to a great finish tonight.

WAG 2009- Hot Air Balloons

Below is a short on site report from Mathijs de Bruijn on the Wednesday evening flight. Looks like there is some good flying at the World Air Games.

"Tonight we did a Hesitation Waltz with a choice of three goals and a 3DT Shape task. The shape task was a pilot declared PIE. The shape exits of three cylinder packed upon each other. In the upper one, "the cream of the PIE", the achieved distance is tripled and in the middle cylinder it is doubled. The total horizontal distance traveled in the shapes constitutes the result.

Since the tasks may be flown in any order it was possible to do part of the shape task, then go for the goal task and after that try to make points again in the shape. The weather was on our side and we had a beautiful flight with balloons all over the sky."

Teilnehmerbericht:

Um 05:15 war das heutige Morgenbriefing und es wurde wieder auf dem gemeinsamen Startplatz gestartet. Um 06:10 wurde die grüne Flagge gehisst und wir starteten mit Vorfreude zur 2. Fahrt, um wieder Punkte gutzumachen.

Als Aufgaben wurden uns 4 vorgegebene Ziele (JDG) in beliebiger Reihenfolge gestellt. Das erste Ziel erreichte Uwe Schneider sehr gut und sollte eine Ablage von 5,50 Meter haben. Sven Göhler fuhr mit 2000feet über das Ziel hinweg. Beim nächsten Ziel warf Sven Göhler auf ca 100m. Das 2. Ziel erreichte Uwe mit einem Loggerergebnis von ca. 280m.

Auf ging es zum Nächsten, dem dritten Ziel; aber was war das? Der Wind hatte völlig gedreht und es ging nun Richtung Osten. Wo waren die Winde mit einer Steuerbarkeit von 180° geblieben? Durch den drehenden Wind konnte das 4. Ziel nicht mehr angefahren werden. Uwe Schneider hat durch einen drift nach links beim Start aber wahrscheinlich ein gutes Ergebnis zum 3. Ziel in der Loggerwertung.

Nach 1,5h Suchen nach den verflogenen Winden, gingen wir dann leider zur Landung über und wir müssen auf die Loggerwertungen hoffen. Nun warten wir gespannt auf die Ergebnisse und gehen erstmal wieder Frühstücken und dann schlafen. Das Wetter sieht für heute Abend leider wieder nicht gut aus, aber ab Morgen sollen alle Fahrten möglich sein. Nichts desto trotz ist das Abendbriefing für 18:15 angesetzt.

The FAI World Air Games 2009 have been officially declared open on Sunday at a grand ceremony in the Piazza San Carlo in Turin city centre.

The first competitive rounds have now started.
